Notification of works: demolition of the existing Britannia Leisure Centre
We are writing to inform you that following the completion of the newly constructed Britannia Leisure Centre, we are commencing the demolition of the existing Britannia Leisure Centre starting on the 13th July 2021 and lasting for 18 weeks as detailed at the residents forum on 27th May 2021.
The brand-new Britannia Leisure Centre is opening on Wednesday 30th June, with the 4 floor, state-of-the-art centre replacing the existing Britannia Leisure Centre. The new centre boasts a modern, airy, 150+ station gym complete with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment across the dedicated cardio, strength and functional training areas. Visit https://www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/london/hackney/britannia-leisure-centre to find out more about accessing the facilities.
Will the demolition of the Leisure Centre be noisy and dusty?
Every consideration has been made to minimise disruption to residents, noise and vibration monitoring stations will be in place in several locations which will be closely monitored by our teams. Continuous monitoring will be taking place throughout the demolition phase to ensure that noise levels remain within the range of safe exposure. Demolition methods have been designed to “grab” the building, as opposed to breaking with jackhammers and all plant has been selected with mechanical measures to limit vibration. Dust will be controlled with the use of water— a fine mist spray will be used from dust cannons.
What are the agreed working hours?
Hackney Council have approved the following hours of 08.00 until 18.00 on weekdays and from 08.00 to 13.00 on Saturdays until completion of the project. Saturday works will be avoided wherever possible and if needed we will not carry out any noisy works on a Saturday. No works will be taking place on Sundays & Bank Holidays.
Would there be transport disruption around the demolition site?
All logistical routes to site have been agreed with London Borough of Hackney Highways and Transport for London. The bulk of works will be carried out after 20th July. Our primary method of access for the demolition works will be via Pitfield Street into Grange Street. There will be times when we need to use Northport Street for access to demolition works but this will be kept to minimum. We will be recycling as much of the existing Leisure Centre as possible, for example, all of the brickwork and concrete slabs etc. will be reused as a piling mat for the next phase of the project. This will reduce the amount of vehicle movements away from the project.
What are the safety measures being used for this demolition?
All works will be carried out behind timber hoarding confines to ensure safe segregation of the works from residents and the general public. Large protective screens will be installed in front of the demolition works to control material movement. No demolition works will take place without the protective screen in place.
We will have temporary barriers in place and the area will be under constant supervision from traffic marshals to ensure pedestrian safety and advise on diversions.
Our site team will be present during these works and prior arrangement has been made with Hackney Council, and Hackney Street Scene has approved these works. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Community Investment Manager, Nabil Al-Kinani, on 07976 587 990.
Our project website will remain up and running during the demolition works with the necessary contact details and information relating to the project http://www.hackneybritanniaproject.co.uk/
